Training for a Race Study
Here are additional instructions on what to expect as a study participant:
HEALTH SURVEYS
Baseline Survey
4 months before the race (or as soon as you submit your Strava Athlete ID if the race is within 4 months), you will be emailed a link to the Baseline Survey.
This will review your background, running/training experience, training plan, race goals, and overall health.
Expect this survey to take about 5-10 minutes to complete.
Biweekly Health Surveys
Every other week before the race (after completing the Baseline Survey), you will be emailed a link to a brief Biweekly Health Survey to complete.
These will check in on your training and any health problems.
Expect these surveys to take about 2-3 minutes to complete.
Pre-Race and Post-Race Surveys
One week before the race you will be sent a brief Pre-Race Survey (like the Biweekly Health Surveys) with a few additional questions about your health and race goals. Expect this to take about 5 minutes.
One week after the race you will be sent one last brief Post-Race Survey about your race experience, performance, and any health problems that occurred during or after the race. Again expect about 5 minutes to complete.
TRACKING TRAINING
Registering for Strava
If you are not already registered for Strava account, you can do so by following this link: www.strava.com/register/free
You do not need to pay for a Strava subscription to participate in the study.
Connecting your Strava account with the Runner Health Consortium
If you have not yet authorized the Runner Health Consortium to connect with your Strava account, please press the orange “Connect with Strava” button at the bottom of this page. Then follow the steps so that the study team can receive your training data.
Strava Athlete ID Survey
Within a few minutes of completing registration, you will be emailed the Strava Athlete ID Survey, which will let the study team link your health information that you provide through surveys with your training log on Strava.
If you don’t receive the Strava Athlete ID Survey email within 5 minutes of completing registration, check your spam folder and email RHC@hsc.utah.edu if you can’t find it
Before opening the link to the survey, first log onto www.strava.com using a web browser (e.g., Chrome) on a laptop or desktop computer.
From the dashboard, click your name or the picture on the left, which will take you to your profile page.
Find the URL on the top of the browser window. The last part of the URL is your Strava Athlete ID.
Then open the Strava Athlete ID Survey and enter your number.

Tracking your Training on Strava
Download the Strava app to your smartphone through Apple Store or Google Play.
Select your preferred activity privacy setting – it does not need to be set to public.
Log all of your runs/training sessions on Strava one of three ways:
Record the activity using the Strava App
Record the activity with a GPS watch and sync it with Strava
Manually log the activity on the Strava app or website
Remember that you don't have to log every form of exercise that you do – just the activity that corresponds with how you will be participating in the race (e.g., log runs if participating in the race by running, and log handcycle rides if participating in the race by handcycle).
You are welcome to log any other activities on Strava.
Additional instructions for logging activities or syncing with a GPS watch can be found on Strava Support.
If any questions or concerns come up, don’t hesitate to reach out to the study team by emailing RHC@hsc.utah.edu.
